In 1910 a gathering of 1,200 delegates from 160 Protestant groups met in Scotland. Called the World Missionary Conference they were the first of several ecumenical gatherings in the early and mid-twentieth century. In 1948 various of these groups got together in Amsterdam and formed the World Council of Churches.
Impact: The World Council of Churches does not make binding decisions on its members but attempts to provide consensus among member groups on issues ranging from racism and poverty to worker’s rights and social justice.
