THE LORD OUR GOD IS CLOTHED WITH MIGHT

The Lord our God is clothed with might,
The winds obey His will;
He speaks, and in His heavenly height,
He speaks, and in His heavenly height,
The rolling sun stands still.

Rebel, ye waves, and o’er the land
With threatening aspect roar;
The Lord uplifts His awful hand,
The Lord uplifts His awful hand,
And chains you to the shore.

Ye winds of night, your force combine;
Without His high behest,
Ye shall not, in the mountain pine,
Ye shall not, in the mountain pine,
Disturb the sparrow’s rest.

Ye nations, bend, in reverence bend;
Ye monarchs, wait His nod;
And bid the choral song ascend
And bid the choral song ascend
To celebrate our God.

About the writer: Henry Kirke White, a gifted English poet who died early in life, was born in Nottingham, England in 1785. Very early he demonstrated a love for books and a talent for composition. But his parents were poor and he was apprenticed to a stocking weaver. He later left and began the study of law. His conversion from deism to Christianity brought him to St. John’s College, Cambridge to prepare for the ministry. He died suddenly in 1806, in the second year of his college courses when only 21 years of age. Prior to his death, in 1803, he published a small volume of poems that shared his victory over skepticism and subsequent faith and piety.

Key Verse: The mighty God, the LORD, has spoken; he has summoned all humanity from east to west! –Psalm 50:1
