A Prayer for Victory

2 Samuel 5:19 (KJV)
And David enquired of the LORD, saying, “Shall I go up to the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into mine hand?
And the LORD said unto David, “Go up: for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into thine hand.”

A Theme to Remember:
Although David was a great warrior and king, he knew that all good things come from the hand of God – including victory over the enemies of Israel. David’s life is a model of God’s faithfulness, even during times when our sinful natures separate us from His holy will.

Words to Remember:
It is possible to move men, through God, by prayer alone.

A Prayer for Victory

Judges 16:28-31 (ASV)
And Samson called unto Jehovah, and said, “O Lord Jehovah, remember me, I pray thee, and strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.” And Samson took hold of the two middle pillars upon which the house rested, and leaned upon them, the one with his right hand, and the other with his left. And Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines.” And he bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people that were therein. So the dead that he slew at his death were more than they that he slew in his life. Then his brethren and all the house of his father came down, and took him, and brought him up, and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the burying-place of Manoah his father. And he judged Israel twenty years.

A Theme to Remember:
The story of Samson reveals what happens when we take the blessings of God and use them for foolishness and self-glory. God is willing to answer our prayers and deliver us from our adversaries. It’s shameful, however, when he has to deliver us from our own worst enemy, ourselves.

Words to Remember:
Prayer is not a collection of balanced phrases; it is the pouring out of the soul.
