When I was a kid in the 1950s, the medical “fad” was removing tonsils. Got a problem with chronic sore throats or colds? Rip out your tonsils!
It was thought at that time tonsils served no important function. Parents would try to bribe you to go through with it by saying, “You’ll get all the Jell-O and ice cream you can eat!” How many of you were victims of a tonsillectomy? We know now that tonsils play an important part in our immune system, helping to ward off respiratory and digestive system infections.
There’s not one part of your body that isn’t important — and there is no Christian that isn’t important to Christ’s body, the Church.
Of course, there were times when tonsils had to be removed — like a kidney, prostate gland, or breast sometimes has to “go”. That being said, [healthy] tonsils serve an important function in our bodies — as do each of us in Christ’s Body, the Church (I Corinthians 12:14-26)!
