Baring-Gould, Sabine

Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924), an English clergyman, was born in Exeter, England and was educated at Clare College, Cambridge. His prose works included Lives of the Saints in fifteen volumes, 1872-1877. He was the author of a number of fine hymns, the best known of which is “Onward, Christian soldiers.” His hymns and sermons stressed his conviction that Christians need not fear the snares of Satan since Christ has utterly defeated him.
