Clarke, Adam

Adam Clarke (c. 1762-1832) was a Methodist minister, commentator, and theologian. He was born in Ireland and, after receiving a very limited education, was apprenticed to a linen manufacturer. He eventually entered a school founded by John Wesley and was soon appointed, in 1782, as a Methodist circuit rider. His popularity as a preacher was great, and his influence in the denomination is indicated by the fact that he was three times (1806, 1814, and 1822) chosen to be president of the British conference. His most significant work, Commentary on the Holy Scriptures, was published in eight volumes and took more than 45 years to complete. His commentary, now available primarily in an abridged form, was an influential work that set a high standard for all commentaries that followed.
