Children of the heavenly King,
As ye journey, sweetly sing;
Sing your Savior’s worthy praise,
Glorious in His works and ways
We are traveling home to God,
In the way the fathers trod;
They are happy now, and we
Soon their happiness shall see.
Fear not, brethren; joyful stand
On the borders of your land;
Jesus Christ, your Father’s Son,
Bids you undismayed go on.
Lord, obedient we would go,
Gladly leaving all below;
Only Thou our Leader be;
And we will still follow Thee.
About the writer: John Cennick was born in Berkshire, England in 1718. At the age of 17 he joined the Methodist church and became a preacher. A few years later he joined the Moravians and spent most of the remainder of his life in the northern part of Ireland. He returned to London in 1755 where he died that same year at the age of 37. His hymns were written for the Methodists and were altered and probably improved by the Wesleys.
Key Verse: And since we are his children, we will share his treasures–for everything God gives to his Son, Christ, is ours, too. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering. –Romans 8:17
