As a starting point: Set aside 10-20 minutes each morning for simple Bible reading. You can eventually increase the time spent.
- Make this time a top priority.
- If at all possible, choose a quiet, distraction-free time and place.
- Always begin with prayer for the Spirit’s assistance.
- Read your Bible…
- slowly, carefully, with mind alert (three cheers for coffee!)
- expectantly and with anticipation (Deut. 4:29)
- seeking a personal message
- eager to respond inwardly
- writing down verses that suit your needs in life (you can use 3×5 cards, the blank side of business cards, etc.)
- While you’re reading, Pastor Rick Warren suggests you look for S.P.A.C.E. P.E.T.S.
- Sins to confess
- Promises to claim
- Attitudes to change
- Commands to keep
- Examples to follow
- Prayers to pray
- Errors to avoid
- Truths to believe
- Something to be thankful for
- I also encourage you to commit to:
- consistent church attendance where the Bible is taught as part of the worship service, Sunday School classes, etc.
- If available, become part of a midweek service, ladies/ men’s study group, etc.
