Alcuin, Flaccus Albinus

Flaccus Albinus Alcuin (c. 735-804) was an advisor to Charlemagne. He was born in northern England and received his education at the cathedral school in York. In the late eighth century, Alcuin became master of the School of the Palace at Aachen. His greatest contributions were to advance education across the empire, especially among the clergy, and to defend the church against the heresy of Adoptionism. He was a great scholar on the early church Fathers and wrote a number of hymns and Bible studies. He believed that an educated clergy would be the greatest weapon against heresy and paganism.
