Lyman Abbott (1835-1922) was an influential nineteenth clergyman and editor. Abbott was born in Roxbury, Massachusetts and was educated at New York University. He studied and practiced law from 1853 to 1859. He was ordained in 1860 and became pastor of the Congregational Church in Terre Haute, Indiana. In 1865 he was made secretary of the American Union Commission. He later became associate editor of the Christian Union. Among his many books were Life and Letters of Paul and Jesus of Nazareth. He stressed social ethics as a vital part of the Christian faith.
