Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) has been called the “Prince of Preachers” — and that for good reason! I won’t take the time to go into why that was so. Rather, I simply want to present some of my personal favorite quotes from this astoundingly gifted, consecrated man of God. By his own admission, Spurgeon had his flaws and made his share of mistakes. Nevertheless, he was God’s man to his generation — and still speaks today to folks who have ears to hear and hearts to receive.
“Consider how precious a soul must be, when both God and the devil are after it.”
“Self is the worst enemy a Christian has.”
“A good character is the best tombstone. Those who loved you and were helped by you will remember you when forget-me-nots have withered. Carve your name on hearts, not on marble.”
“Six feet of dirt make all men equal.”
“Satan’s house has a front chamber full of everything that is enticing to the eye and bewitching to the sensual taste; but there is a back chamber, and no one knoweth, no one hath seen the whole of its horrors.”
“You may fear that the Lord has passed you by, but it is not so: He who counts the stars, and calls them by their names, is in no danger of forgetting His own children. He knows your case as thoroughly as if you were the only creature he ever made, or the only saint He ever loved. Approach Him and be at peace.”
“You stand before God as if you were Christ, because Christ stood before God as if He were you.”
“When you go through a trial, the sovereignty of God is the pillow upon which you lay your head.”
“I, of all men, am perhaps the subject of the deepest depression at times. Yet there lives not a person who can say more truthfully than I, ‘My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior’ (Luke 1:46-47).”
“Cheer up now, you faint-hearted warrior. Not only has Christ travelled this road, but he has defeated your enemies.”
“There is no form of sinfulness to which you are addicted which Christ cannot remove.”
“Christians can never sin cheaply; they pay a heavy price for iniquity. Transgression destroys peace of mind, obscures fellowship with Jesus, hinders prayer, brings darkness over the soul; therefore be not the serf and bondman of sin.”
