I couldn’t possibly recount for you the number of times I have called out to God in seasons of desperation, discouragement, and distress — called out to Him for consolation, for direction, for intervention. In most cases, He has answered my pleas via Scripture reading. What a gift He has given to man! Everything we need to know about life and about death can be found by the diligent Bible student-disciple of Christ!
To that end I so appreciate what Charles Spurgeon said about God’s Word:
“This Bible is God’s Bible; and when I see it, I seem to hear a voice springing up from it, saying ‘I am the Book of God. Man, read me. I am God’s writing. Study my pages, for I was penned by God. Love me, for He is my Author, and you will see Him visible and manifest everywhere.’”
In the margin of my Bible, I have written:
“We must always read the Bible at two levels: 1) Read it as a guide for living, obeying it as an act of love for God, confessing and repenting when we fail to obey. 2) Read it as God’s own sacred drama for our own thirsty lives — see ourselves in the events and people of Scripture.”
God’s Word surely is a lamp to guide our feet — and to light our way down the path of life (Psalm 119:105)!
