GOD ISN’T LIKE PEOPLE

God isn’t like that person who took what you gave and threw it away! That hurts, wounds, and predisposes us to withhold from others — even God.

One of the first experiences I recall of having a gift rejected happened in the third grade! I had a crush on a girl in my class and wanted her to know I was fond of her. I got her some costume jewelry and a pencil. The next day at school

I gave her the gifts. Right in front of a bunch of kids, she threw them on the ground.

On another day, about that same time, I was at my grandparent’s house. I was sitting on their bed, playing my guitar.

Grandma came in, sat next to me, and asked me to play something for her. She closed her eyes while I played. Suddenly I felt like Andrés Segovia! Why? Because my grandmother accepted and treasured my gift to her. And like Mary’s gift to Jesus (the costly perfume), I still tell the story of how Grandma loved me and what I gave her that day.

And so it is with our Jesus! He sees what no one else sees; He never forgets or rejects our gifts to Him.
